Calculate the volume of cylinders using the formula area of cross-section x length to 2 d.p.
Home / 8th grade / Geometry & measures / Measures of 3D shapes / Calculate the volume of cylinders
A cylinder is a form of prism which means that it has a fixed cross section throughout it's length. The volume of prisms is calculated by multiplying the area of the cross-section by the length. Since a cylinder has a circular cross section, the volume of cylinders can be calculated using the formula:
V = π x r² x L
For example, if we have a cylinder with a length of 6 cm and a cross-section radius of 4 cm, the volume of that cylinder will be:
V = π x 4² x 6 = 301.59 cm³
This topic asks you to calculate the volume of different sized cylinders. The questions give you both the height of the cylinder and either the area of the cross-section or it's radius. When you are given the area, the calculations can be done in your head, but when given the radius you will require a calculator. All decimal answers must be given to 2 decimal places.
