Convert mixed fractions to improper (top-heavy) fractions

It is often useful to be able to convert between mixed fractions (a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction) and so called top-heavy or "vulgar" fractions (that is, fractions where the numerator is greater than the denominator).

To convert from a mixed fraction to a top-heavy fraction, multiply the denominator of the fraction part by the whole number part, and add the numerator. The result is the numerator of your top-heavy fraction, and the denominator is the same as the denominator of the mixed fraction.
